During the workshop Mark Williams will introduce a new eight-week ‘follow-on’ mindfulness course (the Feeling Tone programme). The aim of the workshop is to show, through psychological theory and experiential practices, new gateways into mindfulness for those wishing to sustain and deepen their understanding and practice.
The external world is relentless in the pressures and stresses it puts upon us, and we long to be less reactive to it. Yet many of us find ourselves stuck in a ‘driven mode’ of mind in which we are too often distractible, judgemental, emotional, off-balance, reactive, avoidant and joyless. How does this come about and how can we free ourselves?
Both ancient wisdom and modern neuroscience converge on important ways through. They suggest that every waking moment, our understanding of the world is dominated by imagining how we can take action within it. Our mental models of the world are coloured by a moment-by-moment ‘read-out’ of how much a sensation, thought or emotion feels pleasant, unpleasant, or neither (its ‘feeling tone’). Feeling tone is the tipping point for reactivity, so if we can explore it frame-by-frame, we’ll begin to see how to unlock our patterns of conditioning.
If we are not aware of feeling tone, we are pushed and pulled around in our thoughts, emotions and impulses, the body allocating its resources as it gears up for real or imagined action. This can prepare us well for some actions, but it can also put us at risk of becoming exhausted without our realising it. If we are aware of feeling tone, allowing it to do its job of signalling important aspects of the external and internal world without jumping into action, its power dissolves and we make wiser choices.

Mark Williams (1952) is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Oxford. Professor Williams has held posts at the Medical Research Council’s Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit at Cambridge and the University of Wales, Bangor and was Founding Director of the University of Oxford’s Mindfulness Centre that works to prevent depression and enhance human potential through the therapeutic use of mindfulness across the lifespan.
He is author of many research articles and books, including The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness (with John Teasdale, Zindel Segal and Jon Kabat-Zinn) and Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World (with Danny Penman).
His most recent work focuses on how to sustain and deepen mindfulness by exploring the feel of experience, and his book with Danny Penman, The Feeling Tone: Reclaiming your life in a Chaotic World, will be published in April 2023.
