On May 8th, the KU Leuven Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences will award an honorary doctorate to Emeritus Professor Mark Williams from Oxford University for his exceptional and transformative scholarship in three areas of clinical science on depression: memory, suicide, and mindfulness.
Preceding the evening academic session with the awarding of the honorary doctorate, the faculty organizes an afternoon symposium on depression with three cutting-edge keynote talks and a closing talk by Mark Williams on depression. Each keynote talk will cover one of the three areas of depression science in which Mark Williams’ work has been, and still is, hugely influential. The symposium will be of particular interest to practitioners and researchers treating and studying depression and to mindfulness trainers.
Speakers
Dr. Olivia Kirtley (Center for Contextual Psychiatry, KU Leuven, Belgium) will share the latest advancements and insights from the science of suicide.
Dr. Tim Dalgleish (MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, Cambridge, UK) will present on the potential of memory interventions for depression.
Dr. Ruth Baer (Oxford Mindfulness Centre, UK) will talk about Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for depression (and beyond).
Em. Prof. Mark Williams (Department of Psychiatry, University of Oxford, UK) will end the symposium with closing comments on understanding depression.
